Benjamin West: From Delaware County Farm Boy to Royal Painter

Long before the Brandywine Valley was known for galleries and museums, it produced one of America’s most influential artists.

Benjamin West was born in 1738 in Springfield Township, Delaware County, just a short distance from present-day Chadds Ford. Raised in a Quaker family with no formal art training, West showed such natural talent that local Native Americans are said to have taught him how to make paint from clay and berries.

Against all odds, West left Pennsylvania as a young man and eventually settled in London, where he became one of the most celebrated painters of his time. He went on to serve as historical painter to King George III and later became President of the Royal Academy of Artsβ€”one of the most prestigious art institutions in the world.

Perhaps most remarkable: West was the first American artist to achieve international fame before the United States was even a country.

Today, his legacy lives on throughout the Brandywine Valley, where the artistic tradition he helped inspire continues generations later.

Why it matters locally:
Benjamin West helped establish the Brandywine Valley as a cradle of American art long before the Wyeths made it famous.

Worth a visit:
The Brandywine Museum of Art features works connected to this regional artistic lineage and provides context for how early artists like West shaped American visual culture.
